Throughout the course of modern music, one common trait found in all successful artists, regardless of genre, whether that be; the Beatles, the Stones, Janis, Jimi, Coltrane, Miles or Brecker - is each poses their own unique and distinctive voice. Marbin has successfully accomplished this noble feat. A trio, comprised of Dani Rabin (guitar), Danny Markovitch (soprano saxophone) and world renown drummer Paul Wertico (Modern Drummer magazine & DRUM! magazine Reader's Poll Winner) which successfully blend influences culled from numerous genres ranging from ambient, to world, jazz and rock to create this unique atmospheric musical spectrum.
Today’s popular music has been criticized for its lack of honesty and musicality – the creators of such are more adept at operating a Pro-Tools rig than a playing a guitar or a piano. Not Marbin – the sounds are all organic, created by three stellar musicians having a thorough and complete understanding of their instruments while having the vision to push the boundaries for what is possible. Make no mistake about it – the group embraces technology, yet there are no computers, no samples, no sequencers used in the creation of this spatial sound – only loops and effects to achieve this rich orchestral like sound. The creative process employed live in concert by Marbin provides for a mesmerizing experience for the audience – regardless of venue size from small intimate club dates transcending to festival performances.
Attaining the aforementioned group sound was not fate, but rather a well conceived and calculated plan which necessitated two of the members relocate to Chicago (coincidentally, home to a guy they had yet to meet, but intuitively believed would be their next band mate). It seems the guys had contemplated who exactly would be the perfect drummer for Marbin – and it could be none other than the former anchor of the Pat Metheny Group – Paul Wertico. And although neither Dani nor Danny play the drums, the two gained access to Paul’s home studio under the guise of a ‘drum lesson.’ To Paul’s bemusement, in the they carted a couple of rack mounted rigs, two Twin Reverbs, a Gibson ES-335 and a soprano saxophone, set-up and performed an impromptu concert (or audition if you like). The seven time Grammy Award winning drummer was pleasantly surprised at the chemistry, originality and musicality which the guitarist and saxophonist displayed, and with little or no coaxing, accepted the offer to join the band. After 17 years of touring the world with the Pat Metheny Group, then being appointed Assistant Professor & Head of Jazz and Contemporary Music Studies at Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, Paul was compelled to join this unique ensemble, providing him with a new expressive outlet and artistic platform. Wertico expounds, “My decision to join the band was based upon the undeniable talent, vision, and lofty goals of Dani and Danny, plus they’re very sweet guys.”
Marbin is an anomaly in today’s musical landscape; comprised of three extremely creative and talented musicians, all having total command of their respective instruments. Their sophomore recording: Breaking The Cycle, will in all likelihood, garner further critical acclaim while firmly cementing the group’s place on the global stage - entertaining audiences spanning numerous musical genres while bridging demographics of all ethnicities and age.
