Avenue Records, based in Los Angeles, is home to an historic catolog of recordings, chief among them being all the albums recorded by Eric Burdon and War. The list also includes recordings by Blood Sweat & Tears, Robben Ford, Jimmy Witherspoon, the Funkadelics and Circle Jerks.
These recordings were originally made with Far Out Productions, the brainchild of Jerry Goldstein and his his partner Steve Gold. Jerry had already achieved considerable notoriety as a song writer, with credits such as "Hang On Sloopy", "I Want Candy", "My Boyfriend's Back". Goldstein was responsible for putting Eric Burdon and Danish harmonica player, Lee Oskar, together with a local band called Nightshift and thus was born War.
Since their first recording in 1969, War has sold over 25 million albums world-wide. Avenue Records took over the release of the catalog albums back in 1992, when the recordings first became available in compact disc form. The company has a distribution agreement with Rhino Records in the US and with Warner for the rest of the world. Since 1992, the company has sold over 2.5 million albums.
War recorded some great recordings, many of which have been sampled by the best of rappers, others re-mixed, and many used on major film scores. Check out some of these great tracks at the side. |
